Direct answer: published fractional CMO rates run from $150 to $500 an hour, and from $4,000 to over $20,000 a month. The range is that wide because almost every published figure leaves out the one detail that makes rates comparable — how many hours the retainer buys. A $5,000 retainer at ten hours and a $15,000 retainer at thirty hours are the same rate.
What the market publishes
Every figure on the first page of Google for fractional CMO cost, as each publisher states it.
| Source | Published rate | What it omits |
|---|---|---|
| Kalungi | A few thousand to $20,000+/mo | Hours, seniority, scope |
| GoFractional | $1,200–$2,500/day · $48K–$240K/yr | Days per month |
| CMOx | $200–$350/hr | Minimum engagement |
| iytro | $12,000–$16,000/mo | Hours |
| LinkedIn (Pulse) | $200–$400/hr · $5K–$15K/mo | How the two reconcile |
| Moving Minds | $5,000–$15,000/mo | Nothing — it states 15–25 hrs |
| CAYK | $150–$500/hr | What moves it within the range |
| Porter Wills | £800–£1,500/day | That these are UK rates |
Why they conflict
Hourly rates, day rates and monthly retainers get quoted as if they were interchangeable. One page ranking on the US result is quoting UK day rates in pounds. But the real damage is simpler. Call it the Hours Fiction: a monthly number with no hours attached is not a price. It is a number. Ask what it buys before you compare it to anything.
The comparison nobody checks
Every fractional CMO page rests on the same argument: cheaper than a full-time hire. That only works if you know which full-time number it is using.
CMOx puts the average full-time CMO salary at around $179,000, citing Glassdoor. Salary.com, as of 1 September 2026, gives $374,184 — base salary. Neither is wrong. Glassdoor is self-reported by employees across companies of every size; Salary.com models employer survey data. There is no single full-time CMO salary. So when a page says a fractional CMO is cheaper than a full-time one, the useful question is cheaper than which one.
Nobody actually knows
There is no authoritative fractional CMO rate survey. Every figure above is a vendor estimate or a self-report, so anyone publishing a precise market rate is publishing an opinion. That includes this page — the difference is that this page says so.
What Copper Cloud charges
Published, because a page about pricing transparency that hides its own rates has argued itself out of a job.
The Friction Audit — $1,500. A written report mapping where the funnel leaks, what each leak costs, and the order to fix them. Yours to keep either way.
Fractional CMO retainer — $3,000 a month. Up to 12 hours plus async, capped in writing. Ninety-day initial term, then monthly.
Roughly $250 an hour — inside the $150–$500 band above, with the hours stated. Which is the entire point.
Excluded, in writing: ad-spend management above agreed budget, AI receptionists and chatbots, general business-process automation outside marketing, and full build-outs.
Before you pay anyone
Thirty minutes, free. I look at your site and presence beforehand, then tell you the three things I'd look at first. No deck, no pitch.
The third one usually turns out to be the expensive one.
